History: My grandparents prchased Mount Jumbo Fruit Farm as a working orchard in 1921. The varieties of apples in 1921n included Jonathon, Red Astrachan, Duchess, Wealthy, Red and Golden Delicious, Transparent, McIntosh, Bellflower, Longfield, and Wolf River. I believe there may have been additional varieties and there were pear, plum, and cherry trees sprinkled throught the orchard. Today, three of the original pear trees exist and dozens of the original apple trees remain--primarily Wealthy, Transparent, McIntosh, Red Delicious, and Wolf River. From what research I have done, it appears that most of the fruit trees planted in the Missoula and Bitterroot valleys were planted between 1896-1898. I can only assume that this orchard was planted between that time and perhaps 1914, as it was a producing orchard in 1921.
